Gift of art

June 7th, 2008

The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art on Wednesday unveiled three artworks, donated by the AT&T foundation.

The paintings, by American artists Bernard Chaet and Richard Chiriani, are on display alongside a collection of naturalistic paintings in a sampling of the museum’s permanent collection.

Chaet’s “Green Grapes” and “Pigeon Cove” are skillful watercolor pieces. Chiriani’s large-scale “A Schoharie Marsh - Summer” is a realistic depiction of a peaceful green landscape in east New York state.

The donation was proposed by AT&T Inc., and the museum gladly accepted the paintings after the board had reviewed the selection.

“It’s a priority for us to donate artwork for several reasons,” said Sergio Contreras, the Rio Grande Valley regional manager of external affairs for AT&T Inc. “The appreciation of artwork is something that has been lost in recent years. We try to support the mission of local museums to keep an awareness of culture as portrayed through art. Museums are institutions that keep families together and support education.”

AT&T has increased its presence in South Texas during the past few years, creating several permanent employee positions with AT&T White Pages. According to Contreras, the rapid population growth here has encouraged the company to invest more in the area.

In addition to remarks from Marcia Selsor, the interim director of the museum, State Rep. Eddie Lucio III spoke about the museum.

Mark Clark, who chairs the museum’s board of directors and owns the Galeria 409 in Brownsville, noted the importance of partnerships between the private and public sector.

“I think this could be really good for this community,” Clark said. “This kind of relationship is a step in the right direction.”

Father’s Day Gift Ideas

June 5th, 2008

Father’s Day is soon approaching on June 18th, are you prepared? Dad has gotten plenty of gifts over the years: neckties, homemade ceramic ashtrays, and maybe even a golfball or two. But now it’s time to get Dad stuff that he really wants! Whether your dad is a sportsman, a businessman, a military man, or just a sentimenal guy, we’ve got gift ideas!

So how did this special holiday come about? According to the Wikipedia, Father’s Day was originated by a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd. She was raised by a single parent father whom she wanted to recognize and originally wanted to have the date set at June 5th each year, which was the anniversary of his death. However she apparently didn’t give the event organizers enough time to plan the celebration so they had to move it to the 3rd Sunday in June. The First Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910, however it didn’t become a national holiday until President Lyndon B. Johnson declared it to be a national holiday in 1966.

So have you given any thought about what to get your dear old dad on Father’s Day? Here are just a few ways you can help your father celebrate his special day!

1. Personalized gifts are always well-received. If you want to give your dad a personalized gift for Father’s Day, it will most likely be a keepsake that he’ll treasure forever! Engraved and personalized to his own liking, Dad will be sure to respond to it! We found a website that provides this service. It’s called Name Your Things and it’s got everything from monogrammed golf balls to engraved stop watches to wallets, frames, custom sports memorabilia, and more! Dad will surely make you his new favorite!

2. If you find yourself broke, do a favor for Dad. Celebrating Father’s Day or any special occasion isn’t about how much money you spend on someone. It really is about the thought behind it. If you’re a poor college student with limited funds, do a favor for Dad! Mow the lawn, paint the shed, wash the car. Anything that your father would normally do, take that chore off his hands and do it for him! He will appreciate you! (but don’t forget to at least get him a card!)

Happy Father’s Day

June 5th, 2008
The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.        Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
In 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father’s Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father’s Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother’s Day.
The excert below is from the Silver Anniversary Book on Father’s day published in 1935. I would like to thank William Jackson Smart’s great granddaughter, Bonnie, for sharing this with me.        “This year, 1935, the Silver Anniversary of Fathers’ Day is being observed. Thirty-seven years ago, in the Big Bend hills of Washington, the day had its nativity in a lonely farm dwelling. There Sorrow ministered amid the moaning of the March winds.

A father sat with bowed head in his aloneness. About him clung his weeping children. The winds outside threw great scarfs of powdered snow against the window panes, when suddenly the last born tore himself from the group and rushed out into the storm calling for his mother. Yet even his baby voice could not penetrate the great silence that held this mother.

Hurriedly, the father gathered him back to his protection and for more than two decades, William Jackson Smart, alone, kept paternal vigilance over his motherless children.

This poignant experience in the life of Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was then Sonora Louise Smart, was the inspiration for Fathers’ Day which materialized through the devotion of this father and the father of her own son, John Bruce Jr., born in 1909. Through the observance of the love and the sacrifice of fathers about her everywhere, her idea of Fathers’ Day crystallized in 1910, through a formal Fathers’ Day petition asking recognition of fatherhood.”

How To Appreciate Mom on Mother’s Day

May 6th, 2008

Without a doubt Motherhood is one of the hardest jobs around and quite possibly one of the more thankless and taken for granted. Ironically the “job” of mothering may be the greatest teacher of management skills. Think about it; what other endeavor in life requires you to serve as cook, teacher, therapist, accountant, and nurse, among a slew of other professional titles.

How to Show You Care
KIDS — How to Show Mom You Care Everyday

Mother’s Day comes once a year, but little gestures that say “I love you,” are an important lesson in gratitude best learned early. Everyone has bad days, but you can show Mom you care:

1.Help with chores
2.Put away toys
3.Clean your room
4.Do your homework

HUSBANDS — Show Your Wife You Appreciate Her Hard Work

Your wife will likely seek support for her career and/or her job at home with the kids. How you respond makes all the difference in the world. You can show her how much she means:

1.Clean the kitchen after dinner
2.Help with the chores
3.Take the kids away for an afternoon
4.Do the grocery shopping or the laundry
5.Cook dinner
6.Take her out to a movie
7.Anything to help

Regardless of whether Mom works primarily in the home or both, a little appreciation for everything she does goes a long, long way.

Chinese-Style Clothes

April 29th, 2008

—-the Vogue of the Day

Traditional Chinese-style clothes may remind some people of the old times. In those days Chinese people did not know that their everyday clothing style-such as qipao, dudo (an undergarment covering the chest and abdomen), and jacket - would last for thousands of years and become the favorites of modern Chinese women. Of course, the simple Chinese-style clothes of the old time have been updated and beautified.

On the street you’ll find many Chinese women dressing in Chinese-style coats. The low straight collar, beautiful coiled buttons and embroidery patterns on the coats can be seen as the symbols of the Chinese style. Updated with modern design and fashionable colors, these modest jackets can show the graceful and peaceful disposition of a person.

Qipao, the well-known old Chinese style dress, has been popular for centuries. These days it is made of pure silk, cotton or tapestry satin. The high neck, slit skirt and tight waist show the beautiful figure of a woman. Women with a slim figure love to choose a qipao to wear to a party or formal occasion. The dignified and elegant manner it inspires will impress all the participants. It can also be seen in the hotels or restaurants where the female attendants and waitresses wear them to give a good impression to the guests or show the style the hotel has.

Personal collections of artistic photos are very popular among young people in China. The women usually wear Chinese-style dresses for the photos. Lovely girls with the traditional dresses look just like ladies from an ancient family of good social standing.

The dudou that was a hidden part of women’s attire in the ancient times has become the daily wear of the bold and vanguard young ladies in summer. Two thin strings are tied behind the neck and a knot is also casually tied on the back. The navel is discernible at one moment and gone the next behind the diamond-shaped cloth. In summer the dudou feels cool to wear. But the girls brave enough to don one attract the attention of people on the street! This undergarment’s history can be traced back thousands of years. In Chinese tradition it is said that red color stands for good luck and can dispel ghosts. Thus, red underwear next to the skin is the choice of the ancient people. However, modern people regard it as a fashion instead of as hidden underclothes.

So its not just the hostesses on TV who like to sport Chinese-style clothes when hosting a program or a talk show, ordinary people like to wear them too. Chinese women will certainly become more and more beautifully dressed as the heritage of Chinese-style clothes evolve.

Wild Flowers in Tibet

April 29th, 2008

Desolate, out-of-the-way places rarely provide a home for luxuriant flowers, but the Tibetan Plateau is an exception. Here, flowers of many species and colors can be found in secluded valleys and on steep cliffs, adding a colorful beauty to the landscapes of the plateau.

In twenty years of exploration and field investigation in Tibet, we often felt touched by the wild flowers, which show off their beauty and great vitality despite the harsh environment. It is our pleasure now to share our knowledge about them.

The wild flowers in Tibet are scattered at different elevations and the varieties of ecotype can be attributed to the tremendous changes in landforms as a result of crustal movements. Some 40 million years ago, this area was a vast expanse of water. The Tibetan plateau did not reach 1,000 meters in elevation and the Himalayas did not top 2,000 meters until two million years ago, and since that time, the area has witnessed rapid and profound geological changes: the Tibetan plateau was elevated by another 3,500 meters, and Mount Qomolangma (Everest) reached a height of 8,848 meters.

There are hundreds of species of wild flowers in Tibet, many of which are mountain flowers. According to incomplete statistics, Tibet is home to 190 kinds of rhododendron, 120 kinds of primrose, and 110 kinds of gentian. There are also many other flowers of economic value, such as Pedicularis (lousewort), Meconopsis (poppies), Corgdalis, and Impatiens.

Because of the high elevation, the wild flowers in Tibet have late and short florescence. Except those growing in the low ravines, a third of the flowers blossom in the period from mid-spring through early summer and the rest blossom in midsummer.

In mid-spring, the Tibetan peach trees blossom before their leaves stretch out, and if the florescence coincides with a snowfall, the blooming flowers in the shower of snowflakes create a captivating panorama. In early summer, colorful rhododendrons decorate the coniferous forests and high mountains, and in midsummer, Pedicularis (lousewort), Meconopsis (poppies), gentian, buttercup, and wild roses burst into bloom, composing dramatic pictures on the mountains and meadows.

In the wilderness of Tibet one also finds medicinal plants such as Aconitum, Angelica, Lilium, Polygonum, Fritillaria, Co Donopsis pilosula, Rheum, Rhodiola, and Saussurea.

Great Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

April 14th, 2008

For all the work Mom does throughout the year, she deserves to be pampered for Mother’s Day. Here are some fun ideas to make her feel extra special during Mother’s Day week, courtesy of Phillip’s 1-800-FLORALS and the Society of American Florists:Combine a floral gift with a keepsake gift. Phillip’s 1-800-FLORALS or your local florist can suggest thoughtful extras that are perfect with Mother’s Day flowers, such as crystal vases, collectibles, scented candles, chocolates, potpourri, gift baskets, and more.

If you’re planning on taking Mom out to eat, give your local florist a set of silverware and a napkin before Mother’s Day. Ask that the items be included in an arrangement with a note inviting Mom to her favorite restaurant.

For a personalized touch, take a special framed family photo to your local florist in advance to be delivered with your floral gift. Or, give your florist several small laminated photos to be attached with colorful ribbons to your bouquet.

If your Mom is planning to attend worship on Mother’s Day, find out what she plans to wear and ask your florist to design a special corsage to match. For a very special twist, choose a new dress or hat for Mom and deliver it personally with your matching corsage.

Give Mom something to relax with by sending a good book with a note that reads “Mother’s Day is your day to relax!” Then, follow it up with flowers.

Ask your local florist to help you create a special spa kit. A few days ahead of time, bring goodies like nail polish, a loofa sponge, bath crystals, oils and other pampering items to your florist and have him design a basket with the spa items on one side and flowers on the other. You could even add a certificate for a manicure, pedicure, massage or spa treatments at a local day spa or salon.

Personalize a floral gift around a theme or hobby. Is Mom an avid gardener? Ask Phillip’s to create a planter for the porch or patio. If Mom is a nature lover, how about a natural, outdoorsy arrangement with tiny birds or butterflies as accents ? For an athlete, tennis balls or golf balls can be a whimsical addition to any floral arrangement. If she loves clothes or jewelry, tie a scarf or drape a necklace around a vase of flowers.

Want to get the kids involved? Visit your local flower shop and pick out several pretty stems of flowers. Ask the florist to put them in water tubes. Add a note to each flower and hide them around the house with your children. Then, tell Mom she’s on a treasure hunt, and give her clues as to where she can find each of the flowers. At the end of the hunt, have an empty vase ready with a card telling Mom what a treasure she is to you.

Send flowers with a note telling Mom she’s getting a kitchen break. Then, let her sit back and relax while you prepare the dinner sometime soon.

Breakfast in bed is a treat that every Mom loves. Dads and kids can prepare a special morning for Mom by greeting her with a homemade breakfast in bed, on a tray adorned with her favorite blooms.

For a very personal tribute, write Mom a note telling her why you’re thankful for her and attach it to a long stemmed rose.

Present Mom with a vase of her favorite flowers. On several stems tie a “coupon” for a chore or project that you promise to do.

Surprise Mom with a variety of small gifts throughout the week. For example, send her a rose bud vase on the Monday before Mother’s Day, a box of chocolates or blooming plant on Wednesday, and a gorgeous vased bouquet on Friday.

Better yet, send her three, six or twelves months of flowers, with the first bouquet delivered Mother’s Day week and a note explaining that additional deliveries will automatically arrive in future months.

Most importantly, whether you’re planning something local or sending a gift across the country, look to a professional florist for the help and expertise you need to remind Mom just how special she is. Remember to order early, too.
